Nestled in the little town of Yemassee, South Carolina lie the ruins of Old Sheldon Church.
In case you didn’t already know I spent two years of my (more recent) life living in an RV. During that time I spent a few months living in Yemassee, South Carolina. Yemassee is located almost directly between Charleston, South Carolina, and Savannah, Georgia. Yemassee was a pretty interesting little town, very small and cute. There was not a whole lot going on there. It lies right off the highway, about 30 minutes into Beaufort, which was the bigger town. Beaufort was where I had to go to find Walmart, and Planet Fitness. It reminded me so much of home in the sense that there wasn’t much going on close by. I used to drive around town and search online to see what was in the area. Among all the huge plantations one day I stumbled upon Old Sheldon Church.
Location and some history.
These beautiful ruins are located at 919 Old Sheldon Church Road, in Yemassee, South Carolina. From what I have read the church was originally known as Prince William’s Parish and was built between 1745 and 1753. It is said that in 1779 the church was burned by the british during the Revolutionary War.
Forty years later in 1826, the church was rebuild around what was left of the main structure. Unfortunately yet again it seems the church didn’t stand too long, as it was burnt down once more by the federal army during the Civil War in 1865 and that is what is left standing that you can see in my images to do this day.
The love of ruins, abandoned buildings, history and nature is real.
I visited this place alone. For a few hours, I just walked around and taking in everything I could. I even sat down and read some of the histories of the church. After thinking about my Grand Canyon trip I just had, and the love for this type of stuff I figured I would share it with you. It’s really cool when you can come across places like this and learn a little bit while also experiencing something that’s been around so much longer than I have.
