Do you ever wish you could go back in time and see what a place looked like years ago? After visiting buttermilk falls that is exactly how I feel. Why? Well,t I will explain that to you here shortly. To give a quick description before we get to the interesting stuff, and the photos, of course, Buttermilk Falls is a beautiful waterfall. It’s absolutely gorgeous. It isn’t huge like Niagra but an awesome kinda little if you want to call 45 feet little waterfall. I would highly recommend checking it out if you ever get the chance.
The History of Buttermilk Falls
Buttermilk Falls Natural Area is a remarkable 48 acres of land that was donated to Indiana County in 1995 by the Keystone-Conemaugh Group. The area itself is named after the stunning 45-foot waterfall that is on the property. Although the waterfall is the main focus point, the history behind the property is also really cool. If you have read my posts before then you know I am a huge lover of waterfalls. I am always trying to find another good waterfall to explore. Naturally when we found this one I was beyond excited. Once we started reading some of the histories of this great place was when I fell in love.
Why Mr. Rodgers plays a part in this history.
Apparently, or at least what I read on the Indiana County Parks website (link here) the property was once owned by Mr. Rodgers Grandfather. If you don’t know us Western, Pennsylvania folk are very particular about Mr. Rodgers. I think it is mostly because such a great and iconic person basically from the area and that makes all of us feel extra attached. Anyway, the Buttermilk Falls Natural Area was once a summer home for Mr. Rodgers grandfather, Fred McFeely. Above the falls where the creek is was once a man made swimming area, which you can still somewhat see when you visit. Some of the ruble is still recognizable. There was also a cottage, horse stables and a three car garage. All of which has been torn down now.
All of this is exactly why I would love to go back and see the buildings, and what the area used to look like. How amazing of a place that would be to vacation in. I really think it is a shame they didn’t conserve the buildings to see but oh well.
Now that we have gone over the history lets get back to the property and the falls. The area itself is beautiful. The location of the parking lot is,
570 Valley Brook Rd, New Florence, PA 15944 -or- Latitude: 40.419199 Longitude -79.06785
It is good to note that the entire adventure is free. Also, the main trail to the falls is very easy, the path has been redone and it isn’t a very long hike to the falls. We spent some time trying to figure out where each of the buildings were on the property just for fun, but the waterfall itself is the best view.
After following the path down, you will come across a man made overlook, naturally, you’ll want to stop. Just make sure once you’re done that you keep going. Through the gate, you’ll see the super cute bridge. Once you cross the bridge and head down the long set of stairs you will be truly amazed. You can actually walk behind the falls. The walkway that was built behind the falls gives a really breathtaking experience.
Unfortunately, this was one of those times I forgot my nice camera. The photos came out alright, but there weren’t as many as I wish. Hopefully, you have gotten a good idea of how beautiful this place really is. I personally really enjoyed visiting the falls and learning some history of the area. I hope that you enjoyed it as well. If you ever get the chance, or if you are ever in the area stop and check it out. You won’t regret it.
